Joan Smith aka DJ Tunesmith has musical blood coursing through her veins. Her father was in a 1960s reggae doo-wop group called The Marvels, releasing material on Pama and Trojan Records. Their biggest hit came in 1971 with a cover of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Rock Steady’. DJ Tunesmith herself is musically trained having played the violin and trumpet as a child.

Her father housed an extensive record collection, encompassing an electric mix of Jazz (Charlie Parker), Jazz Funk (Herbie Hancock), Rock (early Genesis), Dub (U-Roy), Country (Charley Pride), Vintage Soul (Etta James), Soul (Creative Source), Latin Jazz (Candido), Blues (Nina Simone), Reggae (John Holt) and all bits in between.

She would use her pocket money to buy 7-inch vinyl at her local record shop from around age 11. She was also a regular at the Our Price record shop by her Wembley school. At sixth-form college, she met fellow vinyl junkies and made her first sojourn into independent record store land. First stop: Bluebird Records, Church Street, later Edgware Road in central London.

Even though DJ Tunesmith has had a long history of music, she has only been DJing since June 2014, making her debut at Open Decks at The Vortex. Being a vinyl specialist, she has quickly reacquired the vinyl bug, scouring record shops in London and New York.

DJ Tunesmith has been playing out to highly receptive crowds in pubs, clubs and private gatherings. These include Mojo Club and Le Fonque in Hamburg, The Qube Project, The Hospital Club, iconic jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s, The Vortex, The Long Wave Bar, The Gowlett, The Haggerston and The Grafton. Her musical choices nowadays is Deep House and Tech House with some classic 80s Soul, Funk, Disco and Boogie thrown in.
